Yeah, so what is one one of the best public speaking tips for introverts? Don’t do it!

Just kidding.

No matter who you are, or what your personality trait, public speaking can be unavoidable.

I was thinking about this the other day, as I volunteer at my daughter’s school. My task, go figure, is a number caller at bingo once a month.

At first glance, it might sound odd, but I actually CHOSE that job.

Of all jobs available at bingo (all the parents are required to work bingo once per month for fundraising), this is actually the one with the least interaction. I can be in my own little world, and I can actually operate as if I’m the only one in the room.

I’m able to block out everyone not on the stage. I even make little jokes or quips, since I’m really good at amusing myself. (As introverts, I’m sure you can relate).

However, in a lot of public speaking situations, the thought of standing in front of a crowd, commanding attention, and articulating ideas can evoke anxiety and discomfort.

But, being introverted doesn’t have to be a barrier to effective public speaking.

In fact, introverts possess unique strengths that can be harnessed to deliver compelling presentations. Here are some public speaking tips for introverts.

Embrace Your Authenticity

When I’m calling the bingo numbers, I don’t try to pretend I’m someone I’m not. My close friends consider me witty and funny, and I just allow myself to be that person. I am who I am. If I try to be someone else, it comes off as insincere.

Also, for one of my previous jobs, I was required to record video. I used an app that allowed me to upload the script to my phone, and use it as a teleprompter as I recorded with my phone’s front facing camera.

That had the added bonus of keeping me at a good pace. It highlights the words, almost like one of those sing a long videos for kids, so that I don’t go too fast. (Who else is guilty with speaking quickly, possibly even subconsciously, in order to get through it as quickly as possible?)

If the idea of speaking in front of a large audience is overwhelming, start small.

Look for opportunities to practice public speaking in more intimate settings, such as speaking to a small group of friends or colleagues.

Gradually increase the size of your audience as you become more comfortable with the experience.
